What are Period Friendly Points?
Period Friendly Points are locations in specific public buildings where women experiencing homelessness can access free products to use during their period. The Points are in public toilets that offer a clean, safe place with access to warm water.
What products are available in the Period Friendly Point?
All Period Friendly Points have free tampons, sanitary towels, clean pants, wet wipes and disposable bags. There are also leaflets with advice on how to access more support.

What is a Period Friendly Pal?
These volunteers support our Period Friendly Points. Period Friendly Pals collect, sort and pack the products needed to stock the Points. They also maintain and monitor an agreed number of Points, ensuring they are well stocked, running smoothly and that regular contact is maintained with the service coordinator for the Point location.
Why did Simon Community Scotland launch this initiative?
One of the biggest challenges women experiencing homelessness face is their period. They can’t afford period products and don’t have access to facilities to keep themselves clean. We want to give women a ‘period of dignity’ by providing products and a safe, clean environment to take care of themselves. Read more here…
Simon Community Scotland introduced the Period Friendly Project in 2017 supported by volunteers across Glasgow, surrounding areas and Edinburgh. Provision of Period Friendly Points addresses the issue of period poverty affecting many women in Scotland. Period poverty contributes to the poor mental health and wellbeing experience of many women who are excluded from the basic essential of sanitary and hygiene products.
In March 2019 Glasgow Life North West Communities and Libraries Team worked in partnership with Simon Community Scotland and Glasgow City Council to install Points in each of the 15 Glasgow Life Community Centres and Community Libraries across the North West sector. The pilot was evaluated after three months and learnings used to plan and roll out Points to 167 Glasgow Life venues across all service areas, encompassing Sport, Museums and Cultural venues by 2022.
Encompassing all venues will ensure a consistent offer across 167 buildings managed by Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council.
